Dr Pezzullo officially takes over in October 2021 from outgoing Chair Mr Ben Richardson. Mr Richardson has served as a director on the board for almost 10 years and as Chair of the Liver Foundation since 2018.
In his capacity as Chair, Mr Richardson led the merger between the ‘Australian Liver Foundation’ and the ‘Liver Foundation of WA’. This included recruiting a new look national board, a rebrand and relaunch, to cement what is now the renowned peak body in Australia for people affected by, or at risk of liver disease, the ‘Liver Foundation’.
Mr Richardson recently drove a critically important initiative to commission Deloitte to produce a report titled, ‘The social and economic cost of primary liver cancer in Australia, The impact of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)’, to highlight the alarming fact that Liver Cancer is the fastest growing cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia, costing Australians a staggering $4.8 billion in 2019-20.

This year, Mr Richardson led the recruitment campaign to secure Richard Wylie as the Liver Foundations CEO, and also oversaw the recruitment process for his own successor as Chair with Dr Lynne Pezzullo being successful.
The Liver Foundation CEO, Richard Wylie, said he looked forward to working with Dr Pezzullo to champion the changes needed to drive down liver disease and better support those affected.
“I am delighted to welcome Dr Pezzullo to the Foundation,” Mr Wylie said.
“I’d like to thank Ben Richardson for his outstanding leadership as the Foundation’s Chair”
Dr Pezzullo said she was excited about taking on such an important role in a growing organisation focussed on improving health outcomes for thousands of Australians.
“It is a real privilege to be appointed the Chair of the peak not-for-profit community organisation in Australia for people affected by, or at risk of liver disease,” Dr Pezzullo said.
“The Liver Foundation is at an exciting time in its journey, and I am delighted to be part of its next phase. I’ve also been personally touched by liver disease, having seen its devastating impact on my dear aunt, who died too young from a condition that hopefully in future is more preventable and treatable.
“As for my vision of the Liver Foundation, I hope to work with the other board members, the CEO, ANLCC collaborators and other stakeholders to significantly increase awareness, funding, research, treatment and support for people with liver disease, and their families and carers.”
Outgoing Chair, Ben Richardson, said it he is delighted to be leaving the Liver Foundation in such safe hands, ‘Dr Lynne Pezzullo is a welcomed and fantastic addition to the Liver Foundation board. Under her leadership, I am confident the foundation will go from strength to strength and will achieve our mission to, ‘raise awareness and fund critical research into the prevention, detection and diagnosis, treatment, and cure of liver disease’ supporting all Australians.
