Specific Program Objectives
In the next five years the Foundation will pursue the following directions:
1. Development of new knowledge on a national/international basis:
• Develop and maintain an Australian data base on the nature, extent and
impact of hepato-biliary diseases, and programs and methods of prevention,
diagnosis and treatment;
• Foster, promote and support an appropriate balance of basic, clinical
and health services development research based on collaboration among researchers
and
organisations;
• Establish the Foundation's Liver Pathology Reference Centre
to effectively serve the national needs;
• Expand support for the training and development of research scientists;
• Expand the financial support of research programs with a focus on collaborative
research.
2. Provision of health services and public information:
• Expand and strengthen professional education;
• Foster the development of
a hepato-biliary diseases program in each Australian health sciences centre
ensuring collaboration with other centres nationally;
• Foster the development of a paediatric hepato-biliary disease program
in each region in Australia, ensuring national collaboration as well as international;
• Extend the provision of independent analysis and advice on issues related
to
hepato-biliary diseases;
• Develop, expand and strengthen information and
educational services to patients and their families;
• Develop information, education and other services for individuals at risk
of developing hepato-biliary diseases;
• Develop, expand and strengthen information and education services to the
general public.
3. Improvements to the Foundation's organisation, management and resources:
• Establish a Board of Governors with membership from all states.
• Establish a network of resources and programs, ensuring strong collaboration
across the nation;
• Increase the number of individuals, corporations and other organisations supporting the Foundation;
• Establish the Foundation's volunteer program;
• Expand the Foundation's income to meet the costs of these new or expanded
initiatives.
