The following have been identified as centres of high quality research with which ALF is collaborating:

Brisbane

Queensland Institute of Medical Research and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital
    º For three decades arguably Australia's leading liver research centre; focus on genetic liver disease especially the iron overload disorder haemochromatosis and liver cancer.

    º Group led by Professor Lawrie Powell, AC with 20 research staff, funded by a program grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia continuously (with 5 yearly reviews) for 25 years.

Princess Alexandra Hospital
    º Focus on hepatitis C, cirrhosis and iron metabolism with various clinical trials involving new therapies for hepatitis C.

    º Liver transplantation initiated by Professor Russell Strong, now led by Dr Stephen Lynch and recognised internationally as a leading liver transplant centre;
    º Professor Darrell Crawford is a transplant hepatologist with the unit.

    º Dr Graeme Macdonald collaborates closely with Dr John Prins in the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit to study the basic mechanisms involved in fatty liver disease.

    º Dr Elizabeth Powell and Dr Julie Jonsson lead an internationally recognised group studying the role of fatty liver as a cofactor for other liver diseases especially hepatitis C.






Sydney

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital     º Largest centre for liver transplantation in Australia.

    º Professor Geoff McCaughan, major contributions to knowledge of causation of cirrhosis and mechanisms of liver injury in hepatitis.

Westmead Hospital
    º Major contribution to knowledge of drug induced liver disease, contributes significantly to treatment programs for hepatitis B and C.

    º Professor Geoff Farrell (who has published an internationally acclaimed textbook on drug induced liver disease) and Professor Jacob George.






Melbourne

St Vincent's Hospital
    º Significant contributions to new treatments for hepatitis (especially hepatitis C).

    º Dr Paul Desmond and Dr Katrina Watson.

The Austin Hospital
    º Major transplant centre.
    º Dr Peter Angus has contributed significantly to the management of recurrent hepatitis B after liver transplantation as well as pathogenesis of complications of chronic liver disease.

The Alfred Hospital
    º Noted for study of liver tumours especially primary liver cancer and the optimum modes of therapy.
    º Dr Frank Dudley, Dr Stuart Roberts and colleagues have an international reputation for their work on portal hypertension, ascites and other complications of cirrhosis, optimal treatment of complications of cirrhosis including studies of hepatocellular cancer.

Monash Medical Centre
Significant contributions to liver research (Dr William Sievert).




Adelaide

The Royal Children's Hospital
    º A major centre for the study of fatty liver disease in children and methods of intervention.




Perth

• Professor William Reed, international recognition for work on autoimmune liver diseases.

• Professor John Olynyk: studies into the role of hepatic progenitor cells in liver regeneration, hepatocellular carcinoma development and hepatic fibrosis.
The work of this group has been funded by NIH, NH&MRC and industry sponsors.

• Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, haemochromatosis and liver transplantation by Associate Professor Gary Jeffrey (Medical Director) and Mr Luc Delivriere (Surgical Director) of the WA Liver Tansplantation Service, also full-time transplant hepatologist Dr Gerry Macquillan.
Research interests include iron metabolism, pathogenesis of chronic viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, serum markers for hepatic fibrosis and organ preservation.

Royal Perth Hospital
Liver Clinic headed by Dr Wendy Cheng and including Dr Lorenzo Tarquinio and Dr Nick Kontorinis with major interests being treatment of chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis.
