Arnold L Smith Transplant Fellowship

Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne

What is the Arnold Smith Fellowship?

Arnold Smith was a pioneer in the treatment of children with liver disease in Australia.
He worked tirelessly to make liver transplantation available for children in Victoria and Tasmania.

Since 1988 the liver transplant unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne has been performing liver transplants for children with severe liver disease.
The unit’s survival figures from this complex procedure are world class, transforming the lives of children and families who are affected by these life-threatening conditions.

To maintain these high standards, dedicated medical staff with many years of specialized training are required. Unfortunately, there are very limited training opportunities in Australia and hence a shortage exists of people who have this expertise.
In order to continue the current high standard of care in Australia, the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne is offering a training program to doctors who have already completed paediatric and gastroenterology training, but who also need additional knowledge and skills surrounding severe liver disease and liver transplantation.

The trainee will have primary responsibility for the clinical care and support of liver transplant patients,
and will also provide families with easier access to expert medical care.
The new training program will secure the continuity of expertise, enhance the existing service, and very importantly continue the legacy of Dr Arnold Smith.
